Spirituality is never necessarily a bad thing. Most people have a set of believes about the questions of life that they cannot answer. Dan, however, just happens to have a rather extensive set. Dan has a fascination with the occult and all things supernatural. His quarters are filled with strange charms and artifacts and he'll frequenty recite spells and incantations to ward off evil spirits. If anything strange or unusual is happening on the ship which science cannot explain, Dan is usually either capable of solving it or is responsible for it. He's pretty creepy, too.
